Planetary systems across different niches: Syniergies between Kepler and Calar Alto observatories

Jorge Lillo Box defended Box in the 201 Classroom at the Module 15 of the Autonomous University of Madrid (Faculty of Science) his thesis entitled "Planetary systems across different niches: Syniergies Between Kepler and Calar Alto observatories" directed by David Barrado Navascues obtaining the higest qualification.

After more than 20 years of exoplanet exploration and the discovery of hundreds of extrasolar planets, there are still many questions that remain open. However, the wide and unexpected diversity of planet properties found in the sample of known planets allows us to start answering the questions of how planets form, evolve, and die. The launch of the Kepler mission in 2009 opened the possibility of exploring new planetary niches. Its high photometric precision, however, required a follow-up of the candidates detected by the transit method in order to confirm their planetary nature. In this thesis, we have performed an intensive follow-up of a large number of candidates, divided into two phases. First, we observed 233 candidates with high-resolution imaging by using the AstraLux/CAHA instrument in order to reject possible false positive scenarios mimicking the planetary transit and contaminating the Kepler light curve. We found that one third of the candidates present at least one companion closer than 6 arcsec. In the second phase, we used CAFE/CAHA to monitor the radial velocity of 32 of the isolated candidates to confirm and characterize them. Up to now, we have confirmed 4 of them and have prelimiray confirmation of other 5. The confirmations are: i) Kepler-91b, the closest planet to a giant star, ii) Kepler-432b, another close-in massive planet to a giant star; iii) Kepler-447b, the planet showing the largest impact parameter in its transit, and iv) KOI-372b,c, a two-planet system with the outer giant planet being possibly in the habitable zone of its host. In the dissertation, we discuss the implications of our results in our comprehension of the life and death of planetary systems.
