Title: 2D kinematic characterization of a representative sample of local (U)LIRGs. A `kinemetry' analysis based on VIMOS/VLT Integral Field Spectroscopy

Abstract: My PhD thesis worK deals with the 2D kinematic characterization of a sample of 38 local (z < 0.1) luminous and ultraluminous infrared systems [(U)LIRG] observed with VIMOS/VLT integral field unit (IFU).
Two main topics have been analysed in detail: (i) 2D characterization of the two main kinematic components found in these objects (i.e., a "narrow" component, linked to the systemic ionized ISM, and a "broad" component, associated to the outflow phenomenon) along with the characterization of other fundamental properties (e.g., dynamical support, dynamical masses, velocity amplitude, mean velocity dispersion); (ii) the analysis of the kinematic asymmetries with the goal of distinguishing between disks and mergers, as their relative fraction is a key observational parameter for constraining galaxy evolutionary models. To this aim I have applied the "kinemetry" method along with the kinematic criteria proposed by Shapiro et al. (2008). Then, I also present the results from a new optimized "kinemetry"-based criterion (i.e., Bellocchi et al. 2012) to characterize the kinematic asymmetries in this sample of galaxies.
